In this course, students will learn the ancient Japanese art of calligraphy, also known as Shodo. Through four lessons, students will explore the various kinds of strokes used in Shodo, and practice the proper way to hold and manipulate a paintbrush. The course will start with some basic letters, and gradually practice more and more complex letters. The course will end in the creation of a Japanese haiku in calligraphy. To participate in the course, students will need to come prepared to class with a large-ish pointed paintbrush and either Sumi ink or black paint, along with some nice quality paper. Ritomo will provide guidance on how to choose the right materials, and will offer tips and tricks for getting the best results from your tools. Prerequisites: None Level: Beginner Duration: 4 lessons over 2 weeks By the end of this course, students will have gained an appreciation for the art of Shodo, and will have developed the skills to create beautiful calligraphy pieces of their own.
